CAGE9 UNCAGED
What do the television show “The Shield” and the movies Dukes of Hazzard and Demon Hunter have in common? They’ve all been given a little musical edge by Los Angeles rockers Cage9! The foursome, fronted by Panama transplants Evan Rodaniche and Gustavo Aued has just released a new CD called El Motivo. Rodaniche loves his adopted home town and says that El Motivo couldn’t have been made anywhere else. Alluding to Los Angeles, the singer/guitarist says, “I draw inspiration from the struggle of the artist in the face of commerce”and adds that, “At the very least the negativity and coldness spawn many a killer rock song; you just gotta be looking for it!” Never at a loss for ideas, Rodaniche says that if he could design a video game that it would be “Like Disney’s Fantasia except that Mickey would be an Ultimate Fighting Champion, whooping some major broom and fairy butt.” Maybe Rodaniche can put in his pitch when he and the rest of Cage9 rock the house on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 channel on March 2. Also on tap for the band: a Spanish language version of El Motivo. cage9.com.

ALSO: Cage9's "El Motivo" is in The Music Appraisal's TOP 10 ALBUMS of 2005!

Cage9 has been described as “Panama’s greatest export” for good reason. So how come nobody has heard of these guys yet? Cage9 mixes an explosive alternative rock sound with a DIY attitude and this has led them to some well deserved exposure in the North American market in 2005. But will some exposure in a new market lead to success? I think so after listening to Cage9’s latest record ‘El Motivo’.

‘El Motivo’ showcases a band that has been perfecting their craft for many years. From top notch lyrics to well structured songs, Cage9 has it all. I have not heard an album that has 17 tracks that are all worthy of my attention in a very long time, there is absolutely no filler here. This might be more evident on ‘El Motivo’ that on the bands previous releases because the band has recently revamped its line up. The band went from three members to four with the addition of (a second guitarist) and also got a new drummer named Warren Johnson who toured with legendary punk band Scream, when he was just 16, after replacing former Scream drummer Dave Grohl.

Cage9 seems to have the ability to write hit after hit like no other band I have heard before. I could take a wide variety of songs off of ‘El Motivo’ and put them on a variety of radio stations and have many hit singles. There is proof of this already as the songs “Ice to Eskimoz”, “Hearts And Stars”, “Hollywood Car Crash” and My Doppelganger” have been receiving airplay from California to Panama. These songs all feature excellent hooks, perfect song structure, catchy lyrics and upbeat vocals. No wonder these four songs just happen to be some of my favorites on the album, they defiantly warrant the listen. Another catchy song on the album is “Four Leaf Clover” which features Spanish guitars and a furiously fast pace, it’s an instant classic that transcends genres.

No matter how much I talk about the catchiness of Cage9’s songs I can’t forget that how raw the music is. It shows that Cage9 never compromises or conforms to any set of standards laid before them. They make their music on their terms and it works. In fact it works so well that they produce almost flawless albums like ‘El Motivo’. If this is what we are to expect from this band in the future success is sure to follow. So do yourself a favor and pick up ‘El Motivo’ today before it’s too late.

Cage9 is an act that you should start paying attention to now, because pretty soon they'll be tearing up the rock scene. If you think rock music is boring, thanks to radio, then you'll take a second listen when you hear Cage9 for the first time. When listening to tracks like "Hollywood Car Crash" it is mind boggling that this band isn't spinning on every radio station. Hearing melodies like that brings me back to when people actually listened to the radio for "good" music.

El Motivo is a beast of a disc, clocking in at over 74 minutes. Personally, the album could be cut down to 13 tracks because nearing the end of the disc the album starts to lose its intensity. Other than that, it's hard to pick out anything else that could be changed to make this album even better.

So if you're tired of the rock music you've been hearing lately, don't worry because Cage9 will bring your hopes back up.

Honestly, Cage9's music speaks for itself. They play fast paced rock, that never lets up. El Motivo should be shown as an example for what rock music should sound like. Instead of hearing the same old stuff on the radio, Cage9 offer a fresh sound that is needed in rock music.

CD Review of "El Motivo."

Panama's premier rock band Cage9, are back to seriously shake things up with their newest release, 'EL MOTIVO'. How are they going to do this, you ask? For starters they have added a fourth member, guitarist Ryan Delfino whose previous band mates are now in The Calling. There was also a changing of the guard as the sticks were passed to new drummer Warren Johnson who, at the age of 16, toured with legendary punk band Scream when Dave Grohl set sail for Seattle. Founding members of Cage9 who remain are Evan Rodaniche on guitar & vocals, and Gustavo Aued on bass. Now, with all the pieces in place, Cage9 unveil, 'El Motivo', what I consider, a tour de force of a recording. Mixing infectious hooks, upbeat, catchy vocals about love and life packed with tons of attitude and energy. This is truly a great album from start to finish. Every song, all 18 tracks, on 'El Motivo' has been one of those song-of-the-moment songs.

Cage9 is a phenomenal band that has been around for awhile, but has not made it "BIG"? WHY?!! Because they refuse to compromise their style and it shows in a "big" way on this latest outing. This collection of songs are edgier, and even more innovative than its predecessors. Songs like "Ice To Eskimos" a song that shines the light on global warming. Then you have "Further From The Truth" and "Dead Letter" will blow you away with their creativity, while numbers like "Wasting Away" and "Rainy Day Wait" exhibiting just how talented a singer and songwriter, Evan Rodaniche truly is.

Talented and tuneful, Cage9 provide the listener with straight ahead rock and roll that is real and comes from the heart and soul; a commodity that is getting harder to find all the time. I highly recommend 'El Motivo'. If you don't own any Cage9 yet, shame on you! They are a force to be reckoned with and they will be for years to come.

Cage 9 "My Doppelganger" Cage 9's new CD "El Motivo" is an awesome follow up to their killer "Onyx Inch EP". Cage 9 caught our ears a few years ago because they knew how to rock (hard) without sacrificing melody, and this new full length CD (17 tracks total) is no disappointment! "My Doppelganger" slams with Nine Inch Nails intensity and adds Foo Fighter's like melodic hooks. Leaps and bounds above most of the corporate clear channel "rock" garbage, Cage 9 makes music that deserves to be played louder than your volume knob allows. Damn, is this good stuff!!

CD Review : Cage9 : The Onyx Inch
By Susie Salva

Cage9 , the power trio that hails from Panama City and is now transplanted in Los Angeles is destined to be heard. They play their brand of alternative rock with a hard edge that is like raw combustible fuel. “The Onyx Inch” is their fourth effort and the strongest thus far. Cage9 is a long way away from their tropical roots in Panama City. “Playing in Panama is similar to playing in other parts of the United States where there the audiences are more into listening to the music. But in Los Angeles obviously there is the industry. People that are not in the industry are still over saturated with all kinds of music. Whereas you go two hours outside of LA and you get people who are there for the music. They are excited about the music and that's kind of how Panama is,” states Evan, lead vocals and guitar. Cage9 finds themselves inspired to craft material by merely jotting down ideas and then jamming. “We'll sit down and jam and sometimes I have the whole song together that has come out overnight. I'll have a bunch of ideas and spontaneously grab things that will spark an interest and then piece the mood and words together. Sometimes I'll have a concept and then a song comes around and the two elements gel,” states Evan. Cage9 's ultimate goal with their band is to be able to live off of the music they are producing and have a happy balanced life. “To some extent we want to be able to be comfortable writing, touring and enjoying the music we are writing,” says Evan. “Right now I am finding a happy medium by enjoying making the music.”

This rock band, originally from Panama now living in California, brings us their first cd under BMG Publishing. Song after song, Cage9 shows a lot of strength and electrifying energy. The vocals, delivered by Evan Rodaniche, are clear and with an appropriate tone for this kind of music. Together this trio has a tight sound, making the music flow easily and capturing the listeners attention. The songs are catchy and well written. An excellent job, this EP is highly recommended

Live Review of Cage9 at Zoomba in Panama City, Panama
Inside Cage9's Cage (translation)

Cage9, Panamanian band now living in Los Angeles, had a sold out show in their first back to back series of concerts. It was their first performance in their native country this year and they shared the stage with Factor VIII and Natha. The venue was packed, expectations were high and Cage9 did not disappoint. The concert started with the hard force of "Static Fight" and "Planet Me" from their current EP titled 'The Onyx Inch' and for an hour and a half the band played without stopping, although, having 3 cd's, an EP, and many "b sides", it's almost impossible to hear all of their hits. They played songs that are not included in their US set and even some new versions of old favorites, like "Remember December", with a new industrial sound. In the middle of the show, Cage9 surprised everyone with their version of Sepultura's "Chaos A.D." and new songs "Dead Letter" and "Rainy Day Waiting". They came back with "Octopussy" and closed the night with the always crowd's favorite: "Li'l Doggies."

Cage9 are incredible. They will assume a rightful position in your brain's library of "things you instantly" love and you my friends will thank them for it; because - Opener; 'Planet Me' takes everything that was ever good about the first two Foo Fighters records, builds upon it and subsequently cranks up the melodies and volume. While this band obviously delights in catchy and appealing verses, they merely use these to pave the way for the point of the song. This point is hit home each and every time in astounding chorus after astounding chorus.

'Sick of It' contains bitingly witty lines such as "There is nothing quite like creating a song where everybody is happy and there is nothing wrong, a lucky bunch of suckers in a state of bliss, but I can't sing that, I'm always pissed." That flow upon a sea of palm muting and melodic guitars. The vocalist is so deeply appealing in his range that you will feel as though you have heard his voice for years ‚ that said it never loses sight of its signature sound. The haunting melodies of 'Compromise' work well as the ever tricky choice for third track. Despite its melodies, there is a certain power akin to old Nickelback songs where biting metallic alternative riffs pulse beneath almost rasping vocals.

'Tree Climber' comes across as a fusion of emo guitar hooks and Brit rock structuring. The start stop rhythms undulate beneath the sweet Americanized vocals before slipping into a deceptively mellow chorus. This chorus may have disappointed in some circumstances but stands up fairly well in this context - especially once the breakdown strengthens the songs overall power. From the offset you can feel a certain nervous energy building within 'Static Fight' which is an interesting mix of the nu-metal of Disturbed and the grunge of Soundgarden. Normally this track would have been hard pushed to avoid a feeling of alienation on this EP. However because of the strangely connected yet ultimately diverse influences of Cage9 it feels like a progression rather than a deviation.

Cage9 are the most exciting alterative rock band to come out of the USA for years and they have such an intelligent strength residing upon this EP that you cannot help but put the disc on repeat. 'Planet Me' would be their first single, followed by; 'Sick Of It' which would have a video fuelled by dark humour - There you have it, all planned out and ready for the big time (if the record industry is listening?) If this had been a full length, the band would have needed to look into including a little more variety to maintain a sense of momentum for 10 tracks or above. However for a 5 song EP you cannot find a stronger or more essential collection of songs.
Standout Tracks: 'Planet Me', 'Sick Of It' & 'Compromise'.

The Anglo-Panamanian Cage (translation)
It's been 3 years since Panama's first alternative band, Cage9, moved to Los Angeles looking for new opportunities for their music in the US market. Having already 3 cds and being one of the most loved bands in the country, they left behind everything they had in Panama searching for a dream. Less than 5 months ago, the band got signed by BMG Publishing and all those years of sacrifice started to pay off. The Onyx Inch EP is the first material of Cage9 under BMG Publishing. This EP contains 5 songs, of which "Sick of It!" is already a huge hit on all the local radio stations. This cd was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Evan Rodaniche, band leader, who has also recorded some of the most important bands in Panama, like Los 33, Tierra de Nadie, and Factor VIII, among others.

There is that rare occasion when you hear a local band and they surprise you with how talented they really are; cage9 is that local band. This Los Angeles based band, originally from Panama, has just recently signed a record deal with BMG Music Publishing, and deservedly so. Cage9 is a three-piece ensamble made up of Evan Rodaniche on guitar and vocals, Gustavo Aued playing bass, and Ivan "Pipo" Canton bangin' the drums. Mixing styles such as punk, hard rock and a bit of alternative, cage9 has been compared to some mainstream bands of notoriety such as Staind and Foo fighters. Touring the States, Costa Rica, and Europe, Cage9 has had the opportunity to open for Cheap Trick, Smile Empty Soul, and Spineshank, to name a few. Independently releasing three Cd's in their home country, their new release titled "the Onyx Inch EP" can be heard on internet sites such as PopBang Radio, and bought on their own website www.cage9.com.

Not only have these guys already experienced huge success in Panama, they are starting to get their due credit here in the States with songs on the new FX show "The Shield" and on ESPN/Japan, people are starting to notice and pay attention. On the Internet site, streetwise.com, Cage9 was voted "Hot Band" for the month of December. Just last month they played the legendary Viper Room with Becky, the band with which Keanu Reeves is a member. On Saturday march 13th I had the privilege of covering Cage9 at The Gig in Hollywood.
Close to 1 a.m. in the morning as I stood there waiting to see a band I had never heard of before, I started to wonder if the hour plus drive home later was really going to be worth it. Just then the curtain started to rise and the music began. I was impressed! I was experiencing a local band that not only could produce amazing music switching from all out rock to harmonious guitar melodies, but could actually sing as well. Not only could they sing, they sang lyrics, all of which are written by lead singer Rodaniche, that are quie simply amazing. Their talent doesn't stop with the music; they have personality and stage presence unlike any local band I've seen.

They started the show with riveting songs such as "A Compromise," "Planet Me," and "Octopussy." "A Compromise" earned Cage9 the title of #1 Ultimate Street Fight Champion of 2003. While "Planet Me" is listed as one of the most popular songs on planetbang.com, "Sick of It" is the bands first big time song with an upcoming video release. Looking back these songs seem like foreplay for the final song of the night, "Fear and Sex." Needless to say, the drive was more than worth it. If you ever get a chance to see Cage9 live make the most of it

The Atomic Chaser and the Rocker
Take one part Puddle Of Mudd and a shot of Marvelous 3, with a Cheap Trick chaser. What you get is the L.A. based rock trio known as Cage9. Originally from Panama, Cage is Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Evan Rodaniche and cousins Gustavo Aued on bass and Ivan "Pipo" Canton on drums. Cage9's debut 'The Onyx Inch E.P.' is somewhat of an appetizer if you will. Basically giving the rock music fans a taste of better things to come. Evan Rodaniche's vocals are powerful and smooth ala Butch Walker, especially on tracks like the power pop gem, "Sick Of It" and groove laden
rocker, "Planet Me". While the rhythm section of Aued and Pipo are like hand in glove, giving the band its solid foundation. Cage9 is one of the best new rock bands to hit the music scene and once rock radio picks them up, the sky's the limit for Cage9. Great songs, great musicianship, creating music that is an audio addictive listen, and will hit you right between the eyes.

Undeniably one of the best bands we have heard! Cage9 from L.A. mesh well in every way, a perfect example of a great band. I think if the radio played more music like this, I would personally listen more. Cage9 has that kind of sound that creates imagery and memories. This is what great music is about, music that makes memorizing the lyrics come natural. The vocals are amazing and make you feel every single song on "Onyx Inch" EP. and the instrumentation is suberb. These 3 guys have a sound that is huge! Word is getting out and exploding (as it often does with great bands, such as Cage9). They have done some pretty large openers like Cheap Trick, Smile Empty Soul, Spineshank, and James Iha. Signing recently with BMG Publishing Cage9 has songs featured on The Shield (FX show), and ESPN-Japan. Originally from Panama, Cage9 now resides in L.A. California. Where they are getting some rave reviews and have people talking. We were all pretty impressed with the gigs these guys have played and are still playing. Just in the past few months alone, Cage9 has played at The Roxy, The Viper Room, Tremors, Hard Rock Cafe' to name only a few. If you are lucky enough to catch one of their shows they will be playing at some great venues (see their site for more info). Cage9 have an impressive 5 Cds out, most recent being their "Onyx Inch" EP. Fans will all be waiting for the next dose of Cage9 to feed their Cage9 addiction. If you add any new CD to your collection this year, "Onyx Inch" is without a doubt worth considering.

Hold your horses!, this trio that originally comes from Panama is now based in L.A plays tough modern rock right by the book with great hooks and guitar driven songs, very much like hearing Foo Fighters and NickelBack teaming up for some tunes. Guitarist and Singer Evan Rodaniche has a perfect voice for this type of energetic rock music,he has a powerful way of singing in the same league as Chad Kroeger and Dave Grohl. When listening to this 5 track EP it¥s not so hard to understand why they recently signed to BMG Publishing, it was released in January this year and is available at cdbaby.com (a goldmine for great new music). The opener "Planet Me" gets you in the mood right away for a lifelong party......and 5 songs later on "Static fight", you start to wonder where time went?

Three great songs and a well made video to stream from this superb trio Cage 9.
These guys rock. Their songs are instantly accessible and likeable, switching now from jarring gutteral rock, to harmonious guitar melody. Powerful vocal, dynamic guitar and tight sharp drums keep the songs taught and punchy. Bottom line....? Cage 9 simply write really good songs. The vocal harmonies inject just the right amount of colour without being overdone. Coming from just three guys this is a formidable sound. Cage 9 are beating a path to somewhere big. I only hope they get there soon, at the apex of their abilities when we can thoroughly enjoy them at their best. Spread the word and check this band out big time!

Cage9 - The Onyx Inch EP
“Sick of It!” opens with a riff right out of the Foo Fighters back catalogue and then fuels adrenaline with their raunchy guitarwork. After opening for James Iha, Spineshank, Cheap Trick throughout Latin America, Europe, as well as the United States, Cage9 puts Panama on the map with amped up melodies. Their catchy hooks are ubiquitous throughout this five-song EP and what’s most amazing is that only three people are responsible for this sure-fire modern rock hit. If Incubus and the Foo Fighters met together in a smoky café for a drink, this album would be their discussion.

Though Cage 9 were originally from Panama, the move to Los Angeles has seen this trio quickly establish themselves in their new local scene with an exhilarating and hard-hitting form of melodic rock. Immediately drawing comparisons to the likes of Hoobastank, Soundgarden and Dredg with perhaps a little old-school Metallica on the side, they already have a number of releases under their belts, but will look to make the next big step in their career with their accomplished and quite versatile 'The Onyx Inch EP'.
Containing 5 songs, the EP carries through with a very upbeat feel, and although nothing overly daring is attempted, the transcending manner in which Cage 9 conduct themselves makes way for a very consistent and ultimately rewarding experience. In not wasting any time, opener 'Planet Me' kicks off in swift fashion with crunchy guitars and an excellent chorus. The misleading acoustic intro for album highlight 'Sick of It!' would have you believe that you're in for some weepy emo-like material, but fortunately, you're hit with an extremely catchy and well-written rock song that provides a pretty good summary of the mastery that Cage 9 possess in what they do. Despite every track being strong, there are hints of radio rock (Creed, etc.) to be heard, which I can't legitimately condone (such is my discontent with the "genre"), but these hints are so minor that it's barely noticeable amongst the well-rounded melodic rock that the rest of the EP involves.
Like most EP's, 'The Onyx Inch' is not without it's flaws, with a lack of completion being one of those, but in the end this is an excellent showcase of a band who has begun to hit their straps and are well on their way to bigger and better things - both musically and otherwise. I think we'll all be hearing the name Cage 9 a lot in the future.

THE ONYX INCH is a glimpse of what is come in the wave of hard rock. The songs have a catchy riff and know how to pump the hard rock sound to the fullest. You will find yourself singing to every word. These guys should be above and beyond where band like Good Charlotte and a Simple Plan are at. With powerful lyrics that are real and strong and a well balance in the entire band, theses guys will hit the radio by next year. I think the better questions is why aren't these guys singed yet???? Becky and Cage 9 @ Viper Room
February 18, 2004
WEST HOLLYWOOD – The world-famous Viper Room has been home to some of the most legendary music and celebrity talents. Opening their doors later than usual, the crowd of around 300 (with 100 or so waiting ever so patiently outside) were treated to a fantastic show, headlined by Becky and opened by Cage 9. Both acts were hampered by the again-questionable sound at the Viper Room – and some of the fans for opener Cage 9 (that actually got in to see the show) let it be known that they were not happy about it. You mean, sometimes the fans actually do like to hear the vocals in the songs?? Phenomenal concept! Well, the consensus really is that you’re not playing at Viper to hear every lyric of every song – you’re playing at Viper to play at Viper.

Yet these professionals did not let such challenges hamper their performances. Cage 9, an all-male trio, hit the stage with a musical mixture of aggressively melodic rock, clean, powerful vocals and formidable musicianship. Their music was not in the trite vein of the Blink-182 clones that are currently conquering the popular airwaves, as they seem to be part of this new trend of rock with hard edges and melody, without the overblown necessity to show how punk (or bubble-punk) you are – they do smack a bit of an Incubus sound. They slammed the stage with a straightforward, hard-hitting show that showed up to deliver…and delivered complete with their own throng of screaming girls.

Following Cage 9 was the getting-more-famous Becky, back from a 4-month respite. Singer Rebecca Lord, previously of her solo efforts and houseguest from Real World: Seattle, hit the Viper Room stage in her typically cute and curious style, growling out the lyrics in a nearly Kim Shattuck-esque (The Muffs) style. Rebecca was backed by Paulie Kosta (a.k.a. Durnan Sawchuk – we have no idea why, but it probably has to do with hockey or something like that), and, with his formerly heavy metal/punk playing roots, he took form in his wildly charismatic playing style, often darting back and forth between his section of the stage and over to the low-key and consistently cool Keanu Reeves’ (bassist) section of the stage, while peeling off piercing riffs for the fans. Keanu fans, please take note – gone were the oft-famous taped-up shoes of which Keanu was so fond. Keanu’s ex-Dogstar band mate and drummer Rob Mailhouse held down the skins with his usual fury...

Hearing Sick of It -- Cage9
Your Friday Music SelectionPut Goo Goo Dolls on one end of a line and Social Distortion on the other, and somewhere in the middle you'd find "Sick of It" by the LA-by-way-of-Panama hard rock band Cage9. Yes, that's right, Panama. Where they keep that canal you've heard so much about. The song is off their latest release, The Onyx Inch EP, which is otherwise also filled with crunchy rock. Enjoy the melodic rock goodness as you bounce into your weekend fun.

Some people where born to become artists, mayors, cafeteria ladies, or assholes. I have always hear the phrase "Born to be a rock star" but I never really believed it. However, Cage 9 proved me wrong....these guys were born to be rock stars. I usually download songs from the websites and get a taste of what to expect at a show. In this case, I didn't have a chance to download their songs, so I did not expect much. I was in for a big surprise..... Many bands ususlly just stand on the stage and play....and then play some more....boring!!!.....Cage 9 gives thier fans a show filled with energy, excitment, and full of the rock and roll vibe. The bass player was jumping up and down, playing near the crowd, and going crazy with his bass. The lead singer/gutiar player's stage performance as truly inspiring. He took control of the stage and his fans. He knows how to get the crowd going. So what does is Cage 9 sound like? Well, these guys are smart enough to mix their sound of hard alternative rock (Creed, Stone Temple Pilots, Papa Roach) in certain songs and then switch to a soft alternative rock sound. Cage 9 is a band that knows what sells in the music industry and with this powerful knowledge that they have, except Cage 9 to rise to the top within the next five years!!
So if when you have nothing to do....go online..download their songs....go to their shows!! It is worth your hard earn money!!

Cage 9, O.H.M. - Hollywood, Calif.
Location: Troubadour - Hollywood, Calif.
Author: Arturo Perez
Photography: N/AIt's been a while since the Troubadour's free Monday nights have had something amazing to offer, but this particular Monday evening started with Cage 9, a group that is young to the scene but will soon leave us to go to the majors, and ended with a seasoned band, O.H.M., who are waiting to be discovered and developed with the same intricacy with which they've developed their music.
Cage 9 have been in Los Angeles for less than a year and already have gained the attention of the most seasoned local musicians and music fans. The trio, originally from Panama, have steadily cultivated a fan base based on tremendous hard work and dedication, not only to bringing new people to their shows, but also to refining their songs, growing and evolving. Cage9's work model is one that should be taken by many other bands; they are always looking into making songs craftier while evolving to new musical heights.
The Cage 9 that I saw upon their arrival in Los Angeles are not the Cage 9 that I see now. Their music is more complex, yet the structure keeps itself accessible, making Cage 9 a band liked by both musicians and record industry executives looking for the next big thing. At the Troubadour show, Cage 9 showed off these qualities with songs like "Devices," in which singer Evan Rodaniche speaks of the importance of constructing oneself and thinking outside of the systematic structure. The band also showed a great amount of energy and enthusiasm during the performance, making all the right moves. Each member seemed to be connected with the others through a higher realm that synchronized their music into a rocking symphony. Cage 9 closed with "Compromise," a song that is ready to be launched into modern rock radio all over the country with its catchy chorus and warning message combined with hope. Cage 9 are going places, and it’s great to be along for the ride because they will surely keep growing and impressing their fans. In between Cage 9 and O.H. M. were performances by less impressive bands...without much hope for a major label opportunity, not to mention any success within the mainstream or among the musically serious...

MusicConnection Magazine
Cage9 @ The Gig / Hollywood
September, 2002
Material: Cage9 breathes life into Nineties grunge with quality songs and a thrilling live set. Their music takes the best from Metallica, Soundgarden and Nirvana then molds it all together. Throw in a hint of Incubus to freshen up the aura and the three members of Cage9 make up a kick-ass rock band. Using soft, hard, fast and subtle meters, their songs show versatile songwriting abilities that makes this band very original.
Musicianship: Evan Rodaniche captivates the crowd not only with the music he plays, but also with the guitar he uses to bring those sounds to life. If grungy guitar playing is synonymous with the era, Rodaniche gets his point across a la Cobain and then some. Vocally, he is compelling, displaying total control over his voice. The band’s heaviness tilts towards Gustavo Aued’s direction, with any comparisons to Metallica heard in the depth of his stone cold bass playing. On drums, Ivan Canton tosses his sticks without missing a beat, while feeding off the styles of his guitar players as he mixes it up with both power and finesse.
Performance: Cage9 let themselves loose during this performance and it just doesn’t get any better from an unsigned band. Additionally, the lighting at this venue was a perfect accessory to the music Cage9 played and it made their performance even better. Cage9 brings so much energy to the stage that you could practically see the electrons pulsating into the audience.
Summary: Cage9 represent the best of grunge rock and has what it might take to resurrect the genre. Their appeal is undeniably split between their looks, live show and mainstream-ready music. Best of all, the group is from Panama and could make even louder noise in both the Spanish and English markets. The guess here is that Cage9 won’t be unsigned for much longer.
